This is not good, Dani thought as Lucas drove them into town for her interview. Something had happened between them over breakfast, something big and important and necessary, and now… Now, she was reeling and had an important interview with his father in thirty minutes. Dani wished she had a bag to breathe into, as she feared hyperventilating or worse—another panic attack at the most inopportune time.

The last thing she needed was for Lincoln Abbott to see what a hot mess she was on the inside when she wanted him to see only a cool, competent professional who would be a valuable asset to his management team.

She shouldn’t be having these thoughts about Lucas. It was too soon after losing Jack and certainly too soon after meeting Lucas. And she most definitely shouldn’t be having these thoughts when she ought to be one hundred percent focused on landing this job.

“I really hope you’re not nervous,” Lucas said. “My whole family is super chill. Well, except Charley, but you’ll figure her out soon enough. Stay on her good side, and she doesn’t bite.”

“Well, that’s a ringing endorsement.”

Lucas laughed. “She’s cool, but kind of a pain, although much less so since Tyler declawed her. But if you care about me at all, don’t tell her I used the word declawed in the same sentence as Charley and Tyler.”

Dani smiled at him and pretended to turn the key to her lips. “Your secret is safe with me.”

“Oh, good, because she can still kick my ass, especially now that her knee is all healed.”

“What happened to her knee?”

“She fell off a mountain.”

Dani gasped. “Seriously?”

“Uh-huh. She and Tyler were out running in a snowstorm, and she slipped off the side of the trail. Landon and I were on duty that day. Major freak-out to find our own sister badly hurt at the bottom of that ravine.”

“Wow, I bet it was.”

“But something good came of it. Tyler felt so bad about her getting hurt after he’d dared her to go running with him that he took her home, nursed her back to health and got her to fall in love with him.”

“Awww, that’s awesome. What a great story.”

“We’re very thankful to him,” he said in a grave tone that had her giggling helplessly and forgetting she was supposed to be nervous about her interview.

“She can’t be that bad.”

He glanced at her. “Just you wait. If you get the job, you’ll be working closely with her as the director of inventory.”

“Gulp.”

“Don’t worry. She’ll be nice to you. She saves the worst of her evil for her brothers.”

“Good to know.”

As the small town of Butler came into view, Dani thought again how pretty it was with the colorful storefronts, the diner, the café and the requisite white steepled church that her grandmother used to say was a staple of every New England town. But the crown jewel of the Butler downtown was the Green Mountain Country Store, with its rustic exterior, rough-hewn front porch adorned with a dozen rocking chairs and the painted sign over the door.
